Guide on large items disposal in Japan
Hello. Next thing that really really troublesome when preparing for BFG is clearing large thrashes. Yes!! Imagine with so limited time before your flight date and so many things to settle, guessing which thrash under which category is very troublesome. Japan is very strict with thrash recycling, thus depending on your thrash category pickup date will be different. And among those, the most difficult is large item such as furniture, freezer, television etc.

- Example below is for Yokohama city area. For other area you can check on your local municipal office website.
- For Yokohama area, large thrash can be separated into 2 major categories which is item that can be handled by City, or that can’t be handled by City.
- Below is the list for thrashes that can be dispose by City.

http://goo.gl/f1Z8CO - For big thrashes that can be handled by City, coupon for disposal can be bought at almost all convenience store around. You will need to tell I want “Sodai gomi ken” and state the value with quantity. To safe some money large item such as big mat can be cut down smaller until fit into plastic bag and can be dispose for free as moeru gomi (burnable thrash)
- After that you must call (For Yokohama area 045-330-3953) or request online for pickup. Write information needed on your coupon and paste it on your large thrash. Make sure you cover coupon surface with cellophane tape to prevent rain damage it. You will need to place the thrash outside your house beside the road. Just make sure not place it there to early to prevent disturbing neighbour.
- For thrashes that are not handled by City, usually there will be a list of company that handle it. You will need to call those company and set pickup time. Amount charged also will differ by each company, so it is better to compare for the suitable one.
- Lastly everything is better with planning. If you want to save more money then planned your leave early. Instead of dispose most of furniture, you might want to ask any of your friend if they want it. Either give it for free or sell it if the condition is still good. Please remember do not dump thrashes at your kohai house for your convenient. Everything cost money in Japan and if you fail to plan early that is your fault.
